Pipe Rupture Dumps 10k Gallons Of Sewage Into Newport Harbor: DEM
The area is already closed to shellfishing, and the leak is not expected to affect other areas.

NEWPORT, RI — A burst pipe at Naval Station Newport on Monday evening sent 10,000 gallons of raw sewage into the harbor. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said shellfishing was already prohibited in the area and the spill is unlikely to affect other areas of the Narragansett Bay.
The DEM said that the Navy immediately informed the department and took steps to stop further spillage, using septage haulers and a vacuum truck to service the wet well. Repairs to the main are expected to be completed on Tuesday.

Because of its proximity to the naval station, the Newport wastewater treatment facility's outfall and other sources of pollution, shellfishing is not allowed in the area, the DEM said. The department does not expect the spill to affect other areas where shellfishing is allowed.
