Police Log: Woman's Fashion Show Plans Allegedly Lead to Arrest, Seizure of 3 Guns

A look at the city's recent police activity.

Matthew M. Mazza, 32, of 52 Powel Ave., Newport, was arrested around 9:03 a.m. on Monday for domestic disorderly conduct.

Police were conducting a follow up on his charge from the previous day and had a 24-hour pick-up on him. On Sunday, police were dispatched to Powel Avenue for a report of a domestic disturbance and Mazza punching walls and throwing himself down the stairs. The victim said Mazza had several dangerous weapons in the house. Police found two shotguns, but were unable to locate a handgun.

According to reports, Mazza became angry at the victim after hearing she was in a fashion show modeling with Newport firefighters.

He was spotted walking on Van Zandt Avenue on Monday, was stopped and identified himself. Mazza gave police the key to his garage, where he had stored his handgun. He was handcuffed, transported to the station and booked.

Newport Man Arrested for Domestic Assault

Daniel Spearin, 34, of 143 Third St., Newport, was arrested around 10:45 p.m. on  Monday for domestic simple assault/battery.

Police responded to a report of someone refusing to leave a Bayside Village apartment. According to police reports, the victim was hobbling in the kitchen saying, “I want him out,” referring to Spearin. Spearin was the victim’s roommate of two months and had been involved in a relationship.

Spearin told police he returned home to find the victim drunk and lying on the floor, and that she became angry when she saw a girl had called his phone. He said he did not know why she called police to get him to leave the property.

According to the victim, she was injured when Spearin allegedly threw her to the floor during her attempt to force him out of the apartment.

Officers handcuffed Spearin and transported him to the station for booking.

Newport Man Arrested for Assault 

Osama E. Metwally, 34, of 10 Fair St., Newport, was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday for domestic simple assault/battery and simple assault/battery.

Police were dispatched to Lower Thames for an alleged robbery. Metwally said his wife and another man had assaulted and robbed him of $700. According to reports, he saw his wife kissing another man in a car and when he went to confront her they both assaulted him.

Around the same time, the two people Metwally claimed assaulted him reported to the police station. The man had $700 in large bills, which he said was rent money from a roommate. Metwally had insisted that the money the man had stolen was in smaller bills. According to reports, the two victims had a consistent story while Metwally’s continued to change several times, saying they had been assaulted by Metwally.

Metwally was treated for injuries by the Newport Fire Department and transported to Newport Hospital. He was released, transported to the station and booked.

Other Arrests:

  • Juan R. Garcia, 22, of 1212 West Main Road, Middletown, was summoned around 5:59 p.m. on Monday for a noise violation. Police heard a car with loud bass music coming from it from more than 200 feet away. He was stopped and issued a summons.
  • Brenda J. Walmsley, 56, of 25 Sunset Blvd, Newport, was arrested around 2:14 p.m. on Monday for an active warrant. Police were dispatched to her address for another report, and when they ran her name through dispatch she was identified as having an active warrant for failure to appear in court. She was handcuffed, transported and booked.
  • Marvin C. Ortiz, 27, of 40 Freebody St., Newport, was arrested around 10:10 p.m. on Monday for felony assault with a deadly weapon, domestic simple assault/battery, and simple assault/battery.  It was reported last Sunday that Ortiz hit another man over the head with a ceramic mug. The victim told police that Ortiz worked at Wellington Liquors. They responded to the store, handcuffed Ortiz and transported him to the station for booking.

Dispositions

  • On Jan. 5, a domestic simple assault/battery charge against Alan Glazer, 34, of 264 Beechwood Drive, Paramus, N.J., was dismissed and his record was expunged. The original report of his arrest is here.
