Mechanical Issues Delay Providence-Newport Ferry Kickoff
The Providence to Newport fast ferry is being repaired after encountering mechanical issues the day before its 2019 season opener.

NEWPORT, RI — The first day of service for the Providence to Newport fast ferry has been delayed due to mechanical issues. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said the boat encountered mechanical issues ahead of Friday's projected 2019 season kickoff.
The ferry is being repaired at a shipyard and it is expected to be in service by Saturday. The public is encouraged to check before buying tickets for this weekend.
The popular seasonal ferry service runs between India Point Park in Providence and Newport, allowing people to visit Aquidneck island without having to worry about bridge traffic or parking. New this year, the ferry will be making stops in Bristol during the weekends, and the ferry will once again make special trips for the Bristol Fourth of July Parade.
