Re-dedication of Cardines Field

State and local officials re-dedicated Cardines Field on September 29, 2017

Cardines Field - On Friday, September 29, 2017, officials gathered from across Rhode Island to re-dedicated Cardines Field, the local baseball field named in honor of Private Bernardo Cardines, an Italian immigrant, who was killed in action on September 22, 1918, while serving in Company M, 310th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division, American Expeditionary Force.

Participating in the re-dedication ceremony were: Rear Admiral Jeffrey Harley, the president of the United States Naval War College; Rhode Island State Senator Dawn Euer, of District 13; Rhode Island State Representatives Kenneth J. Mendonca, District 72, and Marvin L. Abney, District 73; Newport Mayor Henry Winthrop; Sons of Italy in America President Don Angelo and Forum Lodge President Shirley Ripa; Rhode Island Department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars State Commander Bill Siano and Senior Vice Commander Ray Blanda; John Duchesneau of the Conover-Leary VFW Post 406; Commissioner Jack Monahan of the United States World War One Centennial Commission; and Matthew McCoy, the State Coordinator of the Rhode Island World War One Centennial Commission.

Thanks to David Kohnen, Mark Fiorey, and the Army-Navy players from the United States Naval War College for an exciting baseball game. Thanks to the Recreation Department of the City of Newport, Chris Patsos and Mike Falcone of the Newport Gulls, and the Mudville Pub for their support of the event.
