Should Newporters approve the ballot question on table games at Newport Grand? In the spirit of enabling public discourse on both sides of this topic, the Redwood Library and Athenaeum is sponsoring a public debate in the Rogers High School auditorium, 15 Wickham Road, in Newport, at 6:00 pm on Thursday, October 2.
Speaking for the proposal will be Dr. Edward M. Mazze, a Distinguished University Professor of Business Administration at the University of Rhode Island and private consultant who prepared an “Economic Impact Study” of the proposed casino development for its planners, the Paolino group. Arguing against will be Robert H. Steele, former Connecticut congressman and author of “The Curse: Big-Time Gambling’s Seduction of a Small New England Town.” The debate is free and open to the public.
