Researching your historic home

Tips from students and faculty in RWU's history and historic preservation programs

Thursday, January 28th 6:00-7:30pm

Learn how to use local resources to trace the history of your home. Students of Roger Williams University Professors Charlotte Carrington-Farmer and Catherine Zipf will discuss their recent work investigating historic Newport properties. They’ll describe their use of materials from Newport Public Library’s Special Collections room, City Hall, the Newport Historical Society, and other local facilities.

If you’re interested in learning more about your home – when it was built, who has lived there, or what changes previous owners of the property made – this program is a must.

Interested patrons are encouraged to visit the library’s Special Collections Room (also known as the Newport Room) in advance to familiarize themselves with the materials onsite, including old city directories, family genealogies, and back issues of the Newport Daily News and Newport Mercury.

The program will include a brief tutorial on the library’s microfilm readers as well as a Q&A session. Anyone with local history questions to ask or research experiences to share is welcome!

Attendance is limited. Please register in advance by contacting the reference desk:
