RI Is One Of The Most Expensive States For Smokers: WalletHub
WalletHub calculated the average cost for smokers in each state, both over a lifetime and each year.
Rhode Island is one of the most expensive states for smokers, according to a new ranking from WalletHub. Over the course of a lifetime, Rhode Island smokers will pay more than $2 million in total.
To determine the ranking WalletHub considered several factors, including out-of-pocket costs, healthcare costs per person, income loss and more. From there, the organization determined the annual and yearly costs of smoking in each state.
Smoking in Rhode Island costs more than most of the country. The state was ranked number 47 out of 51, including the District of Columbia. The Ocean State is just ahead of Massachusetts at number 48, followed by Washington, DC, Connecticut and New York.

At the other end of the list, North Carolina is the least expensive state for smokers, averaging just $1,730 in out-of-pocket costs every year.
