RI Weather: When Major Overnight Snow Starts, Stops

By the time school is supposed to start, most of Rhode Island could be under 8 inches of snow, forecasters said.

The second storm of a weekend doubleheader is expected to be much more significant than the first go-around. Forecasters are expecting 6-8 inches across almost all of Rhode Island, and the National Weather Service has a statewide winter storm warning.

The snow will begin Sunday evening, intensifying closer to midnight and staying heavy until sunrise. The snow could be done falling by 8 a.m., but with roughly a half-foot of freshly fallen snow, expect dozens of school districts to delay or cancel school by Monday morning. The snow totals are expected to be a bit lighter on southernmost tip of the state. And for the commuters: Massachusetts is largely expected to get the same 6-8 inches Rhode Island is looking at.

Before the snow falls, it'll be a relatively mild day for late winter. Temperatures are expected to hover around 40 degrees while the sun is still out. And for the record, spring is allegedly less than three weeks away.

The storm to begin the weekend hit Rhode Island fairly hard. Much of the state got more than 4 inches, meaning there could be a weekend total of more than a foot of snow.
