RI Writer Lists Newport's "Nine Secret Cities"

Newport is known for. . .well, a lot of things. Peter Mandel, bestselling children's book author, delves into its "secret cities."

Peter Mandel is a Rhode Islander and children’s book author who visits Newport regularly.

Like many who have spent much time in the City-by-the-Sea, he has become aware of the unique and distinct neighborhoods and destinations that can be pegged to a certain era of Newport’s history. From its colonial days, through the Gilded Age, and even the impact of war and the important role the city has played as the home of the Naval War College and Fort Adams, Newport isn’t so much a standalone city as it’s a series of cities.

“My wife and I, both Rhode Islanders, drive down to Newport in every season and as often as we can. Even in flurries or fog, the clang of ropes on masts and the squeal of seagulls make us feel like we are in a nautical yarn that is about to be told,” Mandel wrote in a blog post on The Huffington Post.
