Newport Firefighters Move Up the Ranks
Six firefighters were awarded promotions during a ceremony at the fire department on Friday morning.
“This is who you are, this is what you do.”
Those words, spoken by City Manager Edward F. Lavallee, were directed to the six firefighters who received recognition for their promotions during a ceremony at the headquarters on Friday morning. Lavallee was referring to the many acts of heroism he witnessed throughout the rescue efforts of last week’s drowning victims.
The ceremony was opened by Fire Marshal Wayne Clark. City Clerk Kathy Silvia performed the administration of oath. Honored guests were Councilors Henry F. Winthrop and Jeanne-Marie Napolitano, members of neighboring police and fire deprtments, along with active and retired members of the Newport Fire Department.
A coffee reception followed the ceremony.

The following promotions were honored:
Capt. Peter D. Connerton - promoted to Deputy Chief. Connerton joined the department in 1988, was promoted to Lieutenant in 2003, and Captain in 2007.
Capt. Brian T. Dugan - promoted to Deputy Chief. Dugan joined the department in 1992, was promoted to Lieutenant in 2006, and Captain in 2008.
Lieut. Andrew O. Elder- promoted to Captain. Elder joined the department in 1995 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 2006.
Lieut. Philip J. Oliveira- promoted to Captain. Oliveira joined the department in 1988 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 2006.
FF Peter J. Boiani- promoted to Lieutenant. Boiani joined the department in 1992.
FF Andrew M. Palmer- promoted to Lieutenant. Palmer joined the department in 1999.
