St. George’s 113th Prize Day Celebrates 2011 Graduates
Four Newport students were among the 93 high school seniors who graduated from St. George's School in Middletown on Monday morning.
Teachers, family and classmates gathered on Monday morning to celebrate the milestone of high school graduation for 93 seniors at the 113th Prize Day at School in Middletown. Family and friends of the seniors came from as near as Newport and as far as Seoul, Korea to participate in the celebration.
The ceremony began with a chapel service that opened with a bidding prayer by the Rev. Edward B. Mulligan IV. After the service, the students followed bagpipes in a ceremonious walk to the front circle to receive prizes and diplomas. The girls donned white dresses and the boys sported white slacks and blue blazers, the traditional attire for graduates at the school.
Julia Carrellas of Middletown received the St. George’s Medal, the school’s highest honor.
“She arrived in the footsteps of two very successful older siblings but she was not the slightest bit intimidated by their accomplishments,” her advisor Krista Peterson told the audience.
Carrella’s English teacher, Jeff Simpson, commended Carrella’s academic achievements as well as her character.
“Outside of class, Julia always found time to ask about me and my family. She is kind and generous with her time. She is a good soul,” he said.
Carrellas will attend Brown University in the fall.
Chad Larcom, also from Middletown, was recognized for his commitment to the local community through the Lieutenant Governor Elizabeth H. Roberts Leadership Award. Larcom recently organized his as a fundraiser for the Jimmy Fund.
Headmaster Eric Peterson urged the graduating class to ignore the claim that their generation is “too disengaged, distracted or indulged” to solve the world’s problems.
“As a teacher, as your headmaster and as a father, I tell you this claim is complete and utter nonsense. Pay no attention to those who discount your gifts or who overlook your potential, for as long as civilization has existed, across a wide range of cultures, every preceding generation has questioned the will and intelligence and capability of the generation that followed.”
Peterson compared these cynical claims about the “millennium generation” to doomsday predictions that have occurred through history, but have all been failed warnings.
“We are all still here,” Peterson said.
Congratulations to the St. George's School Class of 2011 graduates!
