St. Michael's Students Learn All About Penguins

First graders found out what it's like for penguins to care for their young.

first graders learned all about penguins Thursday in science class. They read a story about their flightless, feathered friends and learned how they care for their young.

Students learned that since penguins can't fly, there is no way for them to make traditional nests like most other birds, and that both the mother and father penguin take turns incubating their eggs.

Just like penguins, the students took turns mimicking the way penguins keep their eggs warm, except instead of an egg the kids used a tangerine. They practiced waddling with the tangerine snug down by their ankles just like a penguin.

"I couldn't walk around all day like this," one student said.

The class also watched a short video that showed how parents and chicks communicate through chirps in the first year of a penguin's life.
