
The International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum in Newport announced Tuesday that Dorothy “Dodo” Cheney has died at the age of 98.
Cheney, an 2004 inductee into the Hall of Fame, died in Escondido, Calf, on Nov. 23 following a brief illness.
Cheney was the child of accomplished tennis players and competed actively into her 90s.

She won 391 gold balls during her career and was a frequent singles, doubles and mixed doubles champion across various age levels and on all surfaces.
She was the first American woman to win the Austrialian Championships in 1938 and was a runner up three times in women’s doubles at Grand Slam tournaments.

She was ranked in the top 10 in the 1930s through the 1930s and was ranked No. 6 in 1946.
John McEnroe introduced Cheney during the enshrinement ceremony at the Hall of Fame in 2004.
