NEWPORT, RI — A disabled vehicle followed and a crash are causing major backups on the Newport Pell Bridge Thursday evening. Traffic heading off the island has come to a complete standstill.

According to a spokesperson from the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, delays started with a disabled vehicle on the bridge. The vehicle has since been cleared, but a subsequent crash only snarled traffic further.

Newport Police said they were aware of delays caused by a disabled vehicle, but were unable to provide any further information on it or the crash.
