Wednesday: Tender Care Learning Center Grand Opening Holiday Open House

A look at what's happening in and around Newport today.

  1. The new Tender Care Learning Center will hold its grand opening with a from 3 to 8 p.m. The center is located at 38 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Blvd. and is the only childcare center on the island that offers extended hour childcare from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. along with transportation to and from home or school.
  2. The will meet at the at 6 p.m. to discuss agenda items including right of way issues, Hurricane Irene cleanup, bike rack installation, repairs, and more. The complete agenda can be found here
  3. The will take place tonight at 7 p.m. at the school. The concert will feature the advanced band, chorus, and orchestra. Donations are requested at the door, and there will be a bake sale at intermission.
  4. The Norman Bird Sanctuary is offering a from 6 to 9 p.m. for kids to allow parents to drop off children ages 5 and up so they can finish their holiday shopping. They will show the movie “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” starring Jim Carey and follow it with stringing leftover popcorn for the birds and a night hike if the weather permits. The member cost is $15 for one child, $25 for two children and an additional $10 for each additional child. Non- members cost is $20 for one child, $35 for two children and an additional $15 for each additional child. Pre-registration and payment is required and can be made by calling 846-2577.
  5. has announced that they will be waiving the graduate school and continuing education application fee of $60 through January 1, 2012. The school offers graduate programs in ten areas as well as four continuing education programs. For more information, visit www.salve.edu.
