Weight Watchers Recalls Sundae Frozen Dessert

Weight Watchers recalled certain Smart Ones Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sundae frozen desserts, the Rhode Island health department says.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Smart Ones Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sundae frozen desserts are being recalled, according to Joseph Wendelken at the state health department.

Weight Watchers is recalling those desserts, due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination, he said.

The problem stems from the cookie dough pieces, which are an ingredient, he said. Aspen Hills, the supplier of the cookie dough pieces, reported positive test results for Listeria monocytogenes.

"Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems," he said. "Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women."

So far, no illnesses or complaints have been reported.

"The recall is for approximately 100,000 cases of Weight Watchers Smart Ones Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Sundae frozen desserts," he added. "Consumers who purchased this product should not eat it. They should return it to the store where it was purchased for an exchange or full refund. Consumers with questions should call 1-866-572-3805.
