When Tragedy Meets Professionalism

I was showing homes to a friend of mine yesterday. There was a particular home he was eager to see. I was also very eager to have him view it. I though it may be the perfect home for him. Unfortunately, the showing agent did not arrive at the designated time. Disappointed (and admittedly aggravated) we moved on.
When we got to the next home I received a call.  The agent was in obvious distress and apologized profusely.  On the way to our showing, she had learned that one of her best friends had been killed in the tragic accident on Bellevue.  She was so upset she had to pull over.  Her voice shaking, she told me she could be there in five minutes.  I wanted to tell her not to come, that it could wait. However, there was something in her voice, underneath the sadness, that stopped me. Professionalism. There was an underlying tone that said she was not going to neglect her responsibility despite her loss.  Impressed and humbled, I did not argue.
When we arrived back at the house I offered my condolences and she thanked me graciously.  She then proceeded to represent her client admirably. She presented the property throughly. She told its story in a compelling way. She revealed  its faults, but also made us see its potential.  There was no 'salesmanship'. Just the truth.
I was on that showing with my best friend and business partner of 20 years.  As we walked the home, I wondered if I could have forged ahead had I heard (God forbid) something had happened to him. Would I honor my commitments, or cancel?  I now know the answer to that question. I would remember this woman's example and do as he had done.
My love and prayers go out to all of those affected by the recent tragedies on Memorial Blvd. and Bellevue Ave.  I am always proud to see our community become family during times like this. God bless.
