4th Annual Michael P. Varrato Memorial Scholarship Tournament

In addition to the busy District all star tournaments throughout the Little League season (spring, summer, and fall), there are a number of friendship tournaments on the RI Little League schedule. Most of these tournaments are played in memory of a respected local community leader who gave years of service to Little League baseball in their town. These tournaments are a great way to honor these individuals who helped paved the way for our incredible leagues today.

And there is a tournament this fall which is certainly no exception. I received a very warm email from James Sweeney of Cranston West Little League regarding the 4th Annual Michael P. Varrato Memorial Scholarship Tournament. Here is more from Mr. Sweeney and how your team can get involved in this yearly tradition in Cranston this fall:

Cranston Western Little League would like to invite you to participate in the 4th Annual Michael P. Varrato Memorial Scholarship Tournament which will take place Columbus Day Weekend. The preliminary dates are Thursday Oct. 5 - Monday Oct. 9, however this is subject to change based on the number of teams that enter. We would like to invite teams from all over the state of RI, and our goal is to keep this tournament for Little League kids only. That means 12 year olds from this past season, who will not be eligible for Little League next year, we would prefer to stay away from those kids to keep this a fair and balanced competitive playing field. However, I am well aware of the lack of fall ball leagues around in which do not offer teams for players aged 13 and some of you may have 13's on your rosters, but we would just like to do our best keeping this to eligible little league players only. If this is of major concern, please let me know!

Here are some quick details regarding the tournament:

• The purpose for the tournament is in remembrance of our longtime President, Mike Varrato, who was a major supporter of fall baseball. The funds raised through the tournament go directly into our Scholarship Fund in which we give a scholarship to a graduating senior for a former player of CWLL.
• Double Elimination Tournament
• $150 entry fee
• All games will be played at our Chaffee Complex in Cranston, 450 Hope Road.
