<p>An evening of contemporary poetry bringing together three distinct yet intersecting voices, this reading gathers Eleni Sikelianos, Sandra Simonds, and Alexis Almeida. Across their practices, poetry becomes a site of formal experimentation and critical inquiry—engaging questions of ecology, translation, memory, and the entanglements of personal and collective histories. Moving fluidly between lyric and hybrid forms, their work reflects a shared investment in pushing the boundaries of genre while attending to the urgencies of the present.</p>

<p>She is the author of nine collections of poetry, including&nbsp;<a href="https://www.weslpress.org/9780819502162/burning-oracle/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Burning Oracle</em></a>, forthcoming from Wesleyan University Press in 2026.&nbsp;She is also the author of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wavepoetry.com/products/triptychs" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Triptychs</em></a>&nbsp;(Wave Books, November 2022)&nbsp;which was a 2022&nbsp;New York Times&nbsp;selection. Her awards include the University of Akron Poetry Prize for&nbsp;<a href="https://blogs.uakron.edu/uapress/product/further-problems-with-pleasure/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Further Problems with Pleasure</em></a>&nbsp;chosen by Carmen Giménez and the Cleveland State University Open Poetry Prize for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csupoetrycenter.com/books/mother-was-a-tragic-girl" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Mother Was a Tragic Girl</em></a>. She has been a finalist for numerous awards, including the National Poetry Series. Her first novel,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.noemipress.org/catalog/prose/assia/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Assia</em></a>&nbsp;(Noemi Press, 2023), based on the life of Assia Wevill, won the 2023 Vermont Book Award in Fiction and was shortlisted for the Dzanc Fiction Prize. Her poetry, criticism, and creative nonfiction have been published in the&nbsp;New Yorker,&nbsp;The New York Times,&nbsp;Best American Poetry,&nbsp;Poetry,&nbsp;American Poetry Review,&nbsp;Chicago Review,&nbsp;Granta,&nbsp;Boston Review,&nbsp;Ploughshares, and others. She was the recipient of the Reader’s Choice Award from the Academy of American Poets and is currently working on a book of experimental essays that are a hybrid of memoir, journalism, and literary criticism. Pieces from this manuscript are forthcoming in&nbsp;McSweeneys,&nbsp;Gulf Coast, the&nbsp;Seneca Review, and elsewhere. Sandra has also been granted residencies at The Arctic Circle Residency, Millay Arts Colony, the Story Villa in Finland, Vermont Studio Center, and Studio Faire in Southern France. She earned a B.A. in Psychology and English at UCLA, an M.F.A. at the University of Montana, and her Ph.D. (with honors) in Creative Writing at Florida State University.</p>

<p>She has published ten books of poetry (most recently, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.elenisikelianos.com/your-kingdom" rel="nofollow noopener"><u><em>Your Kingdom</em></u></a><u><em>,</em></u> 2023) and two unclassifiable hybrid works, sometimes called nonfiction, sometimes memoirs, sometimes fiction: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.elenisikelianos.com/the-book-of-jon" rel="nofollow noopener"><u><em>The Book of Jon</em></u></a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.elenisikelianos.com/you-animal-machine" rel="nofollow noopener"><u><em>You Animal Machine</em></u></a>. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.elenisikelianos.com/memory-rehearsal" rel="nofollow noopener"><u>Memory Rehearsal</u></a>, (forthcoming from City Lights) was named One of <em>Publishers Weekly's</em> Most Anticipated Books for 2026, and is a genre-busting encounter between a poet and her ancestral past documenting a startling intersection of queer history, ancient theater, utopian visions, and modern poetry. Among other honors, she has been awarded two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, a Fulbright Artists fellowship, and a New York Foundation for the Arts Award in nonfiction. She grew up in earshot of the ocean, in small coastal towns near Santa Barbara, and has since lived in San Francisco, New York, Paris, Athens (Greece), Boulder (Colorado), and Providence.</p>

<p>Rather than treating Flaherty as an untouchable figure in cinema history, the film invites viewers to reconsider his legacy by placing him in tension with Benson’s quieter, exacting artistic world. The result is a lively, incisive study of two artists whose sensibilities collided in unexpected ways.</p>
<p><em>ROBERT FLAHERTY LOOK AGAIN</em> offers a rare opportunity to witness archival material transformed into a potent, contemporary narrative—an invitation, as Miller puts it, “to take a look, and then look again.”</p>
<p>Following the screening, JAC will host a panel with the filmmaker. The panel discussion will create an interactive opportunity for audience members to learn more about filmmaker Rebecca Miller's creative process and engage with other panel participants on the history and evolution of the documentary form.</p>

<p>Framing is often treated as an afterthought, yet it remains integral to how artwork is seen, preserved, and ultimately valued. This talk with professional framer C.F. Hayback considers framing as an extension of artistic practice, one that shapes both presentation and longevity, particularly within coastal environments where humidity and salt air pose ongoing risks.</p><p>Drawing on more than three decades of experience, Hayback will offer practical guidance on preparing work for framing, selecting materials that balance protection and aesthetics, and avoiding common missteps. The session will also address strategies for artists who frame their own work, alongside advice on how to collaborate effectively with professional framers. A selection of tools and DIY supplies will be available for closer examination.</p>
<p>Trained as both an artist and a framer (BFA, Boston University School of Fine Arts), Hayback brings a dual perspective grounded in craftsmanship and creative practice. His career includes founding Nor’east Frameworks and Gallery H2 in Manchester-by-the-Sea, as well as ongoing involvement with seARTS and Cape Ann Plein Air.</p>
<p>Open to artists at all stages, this program offers a focused introduction to framing as both a technical skill and a critical component of artistic presentation.</p>

<p><strong>“Why Gauguin Matters: Artistic Response from Matisse to Global Contemporary Art”</strong></p>
<p>Prof. Elizabeth Childs, The Etta and Mark Steinberg Professor of Modern Art, Department of Art History and Archaeology, Washington University in St. Louis</p><p> RSVP encouraged | Free and open to the public</p><p>Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) is recognized as a seminal figure in French Post-Impressionism and modernism, notable for his non-naturalistic use of color and decorative flattening of space. Elizabeth Childs explores the enduring influence of Gauguin across modern and contemporary art, from Picasso and Matisse, who admired his work in early 20th-century Paris, to international women artists like Paula Modersohn-Becker and Amrita Sher-Gil, who brought distinct perspectives to his themes. More recently, Pacific Islander artists such as Yuki Kihara, Tyla Vaeau, and Kay George have engaged critically with Gauguin’s legacy, interrogating its gendered and racial politics and reimagining his imagery in contemporary contexts. These works respond to the existential questions Gauguin posed in <em>Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?</em>—a painting on view nearby at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.</p><p><strong>ABOUT THE LECTURER</strong></p>
<p>Professor Elizabeth Childs, Washington University in St. Louis, specializes in modern art, encompassing late eighteenth- through early twentieth-century European art and visual culture, broadly defined. She is a specialist in European avant-garde modernism, particularly painting, photography, and prints, and has published on key figures including Daumier, Degas, Van Gogh, and Gauguin, as well as select chapters of American art, including the photography of exploration, the earth works of Robert Smithson, and the exoticism of John La Farge and historian Henry Adams. Her work on Gauguin emphasizes his engagement with Tahitian and Marquesan culture, colonial society, photography, world religions, and the construction of a primitivist identity, with a forthcoming monograph on his late work and writings in progress.</p>
<p>In her courses, Professor Childs considers art in relation to political, social, and ideological contexts, with particular attention to colonialism, imperialism, tourism, anthropology, and exploration. She is broadly interested in exoticism, orientalism, and japonisme in both fine and popular arts, the study of gender and race, theories and practices of landscape painting and photography, modern art in transnational contexts, and the collection and interpretation of non-Western objects in the Euro-American art world. WEIL LECTURE</strong></p><p><strong>The <strong>Mark Steinberg Weil</strong> Art History Lecture at Jamestown Arts Center is a free public program established in memory of artist Joan Hall’s late husband. Each year, the lecture invites a distinguished art historian to speak on a topic connected to Professor Weil’s areas of research, continuing his legacy of scholarship, curiosity, and deep engagement with the visual arts.</strong></p><p><strong>Mark S. Weil (1939–2021) was the E. Desmond Lee Professor Emeritus for Collaboration in the Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, where he taught for nearly four decades and twice served as chair of the Department of Art History and Archaeology. A specialist in Italian Baroque sculpture and early modern European art, he was a deeply influential scholar, curator, and teacher known for his commitment to close looking and firsthand engagement with works of art. He was also a passionate collector of Old Master prints, drawings, and sculpture, a collection that was gifted to the Saint Louis Art Museum upon his death. In his own artistic practice, he created a series of self-portraits reflected in sculptural works. In retirement, he lived in Jamestown, Rhode Island, where he continued his research, mentoring, and artistic practice, and remained a dedicated supporter of the arts and humanities.</strong></p>

<p>Some of these essays appeared, at times in different form, in the following publications: SPIN, Poetry, Slice, Poets &amp; Writers, Ploughshares Blog, Tin House, Los Angeles Review of Books, &amp; FENCE.</p>
<p>The talk will begin with a few words on the genesis of <em>Happiness Ruined Everything</em>, sharing the unique journey of the book to publication. Following a selection of readings, Klein will offer insights into the writing process—exploring the moments that shaped the essays but never made it to the page. The evening will conclude with a Q&amp;A session, giving the audience a chance to engage directly with the author. Books will be available for purchase and a book signing will be hosted after the talk.</p>

<p><strong>ABOUT THE AUTHOR</strong></p>
<p><strong>Michael Klein</strong> is a five-time finalist and two-time winner of the Lambda Literary Award for poetry. He's also the author of two books of autobiography and his work has appeared in Poetry, Paris Review, American Poetry Review, Tin House, Bennington Review and many other publications. He has taught writing at Sarah Lawrence, Binghamton University, Hunter College, the Fine Arts Work Center summer program (where he also had a fellowship in poetry in 1990), and for more than 20 years was on the MFA faculty at Goddard College.  His new book,"Happiness Ruined Everything: Essays" was just published by Galileo Books. Currently, he is a consultant and editor (and sometime ghostwriter) for people who are working on memoirs and/or poetry manuscripts.</p>

<p>RSVP encouraged | Pay-what-you-can | Walk-ins welcome</p><p>An evening with acclaimed writer Brad Gooch, this talk celebrates the release of his new memoir, <em>Good Morning Moon: A Snapshot of an American Family</em>. The book is more than a chronicle of a modern family, it is an unflinchingly honest account of Gooch’s decision to start a family later in life—an unexpected leap following decades in which such possibilities were unimaginable. Gooch movingly describes living through the AIDS crisis in New York, the loss of his first great love, and a surprise second act that includes finding love again, marrying his husband Paul and welcoming two boys through surrogacy.</p>
<p>Gooch writes with vulnerability about all that parenthood brings: not only joy and wonder, but also anxieties, night frights, money worries, and many universal themes that parents of children young and old will recognize. As with many parents, the arrival of children invites us to question our own mortality. Children become “living chronometers,” marking time in a way that reignites Gooch’s curiosity about his own upbringing as an only child in Pennsylvania. What he doesn’t expect to find is a mystery hidden in plain sight , one that only a DNA test can solve.</p>
