Boom: What's That Sound?

North Kingstown, Portsmouth and Middletown residents reported loud booms today. Police say it's ordinance being exploded.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI— At first, it sounded like the garbage collection. Then it was worse.

Thursday morning, many residents complained about loud noises and explosions that sounded like a possible earthquake.

According to North Kingstown police, however, the noise is ordinance being deliberately blown up at Quonset. The fire marshal blows up the material several times a year, police told the Patch, and there is no cause for alarm.
