Happy Hour starts at 11:00 AM. The business meeting begins at 11:30 AM and lunch follows.&nbsp;
Our entertainment this month is&nbsp;Folk Music by Abrey Atwater. We will also be introducing the two scholarship recipients for 2026.
Our club promotes social activities and charitable giving, and also provides for intellectual growth and community service.&nbsp;

Some of these essays appeared, at times in different form, in the following publications: SPIN, Poetry, Slice, Poets &amp; Writers, Ploughshares Blog, Tin House, Los Angeles Review of Books, &amp; FENCE.
The talk will begin with a few words on the genesis of Happiness Ruined Everything, sharing the unique journey of the book to publication. Following a selection of readings, Klein will offer insights into the writing process—exploring the moments that shaped the essays but never made it to the page. The evening will conclude with a Q&amp;A session, giving the audience a chance to engage directly with the author. Books will be available for purchase and a book signing will be hosted after the talk.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Michael Klein is a five-time finalist and two-time winner of the Lambda Literary Award for poetry. He's also the author of two books of autobiography and his work has appeared in Poetry, Paris Review, American Poetry Review, Tin House, Bennington Review and many other publications. He has taught writing at Sarah Lawrence, Binghamton University, Hunter College, the Fine Arts Work Center summer program (where he also had a fellowship in poetry in 1990), and for more than 20 years was on the MFA faculty at Goddard College. His new book,"Happiness Ruined Everything: Essays" was just published by Galileo Books. Currently, he is a consultant and editor (and sometime ghostwriter) for people who are working on memoirs and/or poetry manuscripts.

On view from April 10 through June 13, 2026, <a href="https://www.jamestownartcenter.org/upcoming-exhibitions/next" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">NEXT</a> gathers a new generation of artists connected to Jamestown—those who grew up on the island or spent formative years within its orbit. Across media, the exhibition traces how local experience persists, mutates, and reappears within contemporary artistic production. This program brings those undercurrents into conversation, making visible the relational and generational dynamics that animate the work.

The book is more than a chronicle of a modern family, it is an unflinchingly honest account of Gooch’s decision to start a family later in life—an unexpected leap following decades in which such possibilities were unimaginable. Gooch movingly describes living through the AIDS crisis in New York, the loss of his first great love, and a surprise second act that includes finding love again, marrying his husband Paul and welcoming two boys through surrogacy.
Gooch writes with vulnerability about all that parenthood brings: not only joy and wonder, but also anxieties, night frights, money worries, and many universal themes that parents of children young and old will recognize. As with many parents, the arrival of children invites us to question our own mortality.
