Artist Talk: After the Fire: Batik, Memory, and the Lives Trees HoldRSVP encouraged |Pay-what-you-can Join artist Adam de Boer for a lively, illustrated conversation with Jamestown Arts Center Executive Director Christine Cocca on the occasion of A Celebration of Trees. Rather than a traditional artist lecture, this evening will unfold as a dialogue between de Boer and Cocca, whose shared experiences as Fulbright scholars in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, provide a natural point of connection for a broader conversation about art, place, cultural exchange, and the ways landscapes shape creative practice.Beginning with de Boer’s Reconstruction Site No. 5, currently on view in the exhibition, the conversation will consider how trees, coastlines, cityscapes, and sites of destruction and renewal can hold memory, identity, and transformation. In January 2025, the Los Angeles wildfires devastated de Boer’s neighborhood of Altadena. As the son of a firefighter, de Boer had long understood fire as part of California’s ecological and cultural reality, but experiencing the disaster so closely reshaped his relationship to the place he calls home. His ongoing Reconstruction Site series records not only destruction, but also endurance, renewal, and the intimate ways a city begins to rebuild after loss.
The discussion will also trace de Boer’s long engagement with Javanese batik, a centuries-old textile tradition that he has adapted into a hybrid painting practice. Through images, process documentation, and exchange, de Boer and Cocca will discuss molten beeswax, canting tools, staining, boiling, oil painting, and the deeper questions embedded in technique: what it means to inherit, translate, and transform a cultural form across geographies. Together, they will reflect on California and Indonesia, wildfire and memory, Dutch-Indonesian heritage, and the role of artistic practice in making sense of the places that form us.
The evening will include projected images, behind-the-scenes views of de Boer’s process, and time for audience Q&amp;A.About the Artist
<a href="https://www.adamdeboer.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Adam de Boer</a> is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work combines traditional Javanese crafts, including batik and wood carving, with Western oil painting as a way to connect his artistic practice with those of his distant cultural forebears. For more than a decade, his coastal scenes, cityscapes, and architectural landscapes have explored the visual textures, cultural minglings, and socioeconomic realities of California and Indonesia. His recent work depicts the cultural hodgepodge of Los Angeles while maintaining a strong connection to his Dutch-Indonesian immigrant heritage.
De Boer received a BFA in Painting from the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Jane Lombard Gallery, New York; Gazelli Art House, London; Plato, New York; Taymour Grahne Projects, London; The Pit, Los Angeles; Gajah Gallery, Jakarta and Singapore; Ben Brown Fine Arts, London and Hong Kong; The Hole, New York and Los Angeles; World Trade Centre, Jakarta; and Art Jog, Yogyakarta.
De Boer is a Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellowship alumnus and, in 2017, was awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship to Java, Indonesia. His additional grants and awards include the International Art Prize presented by Winsor &amp; Newton and Paul Smith’s Foundation, and Arts for India from the University of the Arts London.

With Randy Ingram, Rufus Reid, and Joe LaBarberaDoors: 7 pm | Music: 7:30 pmPresented in partnership with <a href="https://puddingstonemusic.org/home" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Puddingstone</a>, join us at JAC for an intimate evening of jazz celebrating the music, sound, and enduring influence of Bill Evans, one of the most beloved pianists and composers in modern jazz. Led by acclaimed pianist and composer Randy Ingram, this tribute project brings together a remarkable trio featuring legendary bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Joe LaBarbera, who was the last drummer in Evans’s trio.The concert coincides with Ingram’s forthcoming album, <a href="https://bkmusicpr.disco.ac/playlist-new/29186949?date=20260511&amp;user_id=2582593&amp;signature=prq3w2yb6-Wgqqp5MBG8HrN623A:yEcHsn0G" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Sound Within: A Celebration of Bill Evans</a>, a deeply personal homage to an artist who has long shaped his musical imagination. Rather than simply recreating Evans’s style, Ingram approaches the tribute as a search for sound, feeling, and interiority: the qualities that made Evans’s playing so quietly transformative. With Reid and LaBarbera, the project honors Evans’s lyrical phrasing, harmonic depth, and spacious sense of ensemble dialogue while allowing each musician’s voice to emerge fully in the present.
<a href="https://www.randyingram.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Randy Ingram</a> is a Brooklyn-based pianist and composer praised by JazzTimes, The New York Times, and The San Francisco Chronicle for his crystalline sound, contemporary harmonic language, and thoughtful approach to composition and improvisation. He has performed internationally across the United States, Europe, Japan, and South Korea, and has released a series of acclaimed recordings as a bandleader. His work spans trio, duo, and quartet settings, and reflects a deep commitment to melody, motion, and expressive clarity.
<a href="https://rufusreid.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Rufus Reid</a> is an acclaimed bassist, composer, and educator whose career has been central to jazz since the 1970s. He has appeared on more than 500 recordings, including collaborations with Dexter Gordon, Andrew Hill, Kenny Barron, Stan Getz, J.J. Johnson, Lee Konitz, Jack DeJohnette, and many others. Reid is also the author of The Evolving Bassist, a foundational text in double bass pedagogy, and his 2014 album Quiet Pride – The Elizabeth Catlett Project received two Grammy nominations.
<a href="https://www.instagram.com/stixlabarbe/?hl=en" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Joe LaBarbera</a> is a drummer and composer best known for his work with the Bill Evans Trio during the final years of Evans’s career. He has performed and recorded with many major figures in jazz, including Woody Herman, Chuck Mangione, Bob Brookmeyer, Jim Hall, Art Farmer, Art Pepper, John Scofield, Toots Thielemans, Phil Woods, and Tony Bennett. In 2021, LaBarbera published Times Remembered: The Final Years of the Bill Evans Trio, a memoir reflecting on his time with Evans.

West Bay Community Theater will present one of the original "jukebox musicals", MAMMA MIA! - IN CONCERT, Saturday, August 15, 2026 (rain date August 16th) at the North Kingstown Town Beach Bandshell. WBCT's unique, hybrid "In-Concert" format lends itself particularly well to this show, putting the music of ABBA to the forefront while still delivering a theatrical experience not to be missed. 
Last year's CHICAGO-IN CONCERT
broke all WBCT attendance records and MAMMA MIA! looks to do even better, if advance ticket sales are any indication. WBCT&nbsp;President Terry Shea directs, working with the returning Alex Tirrell (Music Director) and Marley Shaw (Choreographer) to produce a sure-fire summer hit. With food trucks (Hometown Poke, Palagis Ice Cream, and Pam's Grill On the Go), an August night on the water, and a night of musical theater, it's the perfect occasion to arrive early, claim your spot on the lawn and take in one of the must-see events of the season. 
The cast includes Patty Mott (who many will remember as Mama Morton in last year's Chicago), Amanda Birkitt, Ron Martin, Gabriella Rose, Luca Ialongo, Morgan Van Thuyne, Joey Del Santo, Ivis Tostes, Olivia Dufresne, Nathaniel Jarret, Jackson Singleton, Michael Gorman, Harper Hennings, Cienna McNamara, Maggie Peterson, Kristen Allen, Rylie Appolonia, James Boughman, Alexa Laurent, Laura Perez, and Jack Barriere. 
Mamma Mia!-In Concert will be another patented WBCT hybrid musical event with a blend of "In Concert"-style staging and traditional musical theater, all accentuated by large video screens featuring live closeups and selected imagery and song titles. No seat is a bad seat for a WBCT summer show!
