Framing is often treated as an afterthought, yet it remains integral to how artwork is seen, preserved, and ultimately valued. This talk with professional framer C.F. Hayback considers framing as an extension of artistic practice, one that shapes both presentation and longevity, particularly within coastal environments where humidity and salt air pose ongoing risks.

Drawing on more than three decades of experience, Hayback will offer practical guidance on preparing work for framing, selecting materials that balance protection and aesthetics, and avoiding common missteps. The session will also address strategies for artists who frame their own work, alongside advice on how to collaborate effectively with professional framers. A selection of tools and DIY supplies will be available for closer examination.

Trained as both an artist and a framer (BFA, Boston University School of Fine Arts), Hayback brings a dual perspective grounded in craftsmanship and creative practice. His career includes founding Nor’east Frameworks and Gallery H2 in Manchester-by-the-Sea, as well as ongoing involvement with seARTS and Cape Ann Plein Air.

Open to artists at all stages, this program offers a focused introduction to framing as both a technical skill and a critical component of artistic presentation.
