Daffodil Days Event Brings Mellow Response
Crowds ambled rather than surged for many Wickford shops
Wickford's 2011 Daffodil Days event offered music, a fashion show, a tour and even a dog parade, but for many shops, the vistors who arrived to enjoy the events were not necessarily moved to open their wallets.
"I think the special events brought in more people from outside North Kingstown," said Sue Hanson, who was staffing the on Brown Street Sunday afternoon. While the store was empty as she spoke, Hanson said she'd had a good flow of customers Saturday and Sunday, and she praised the e for its marketing efforts.
Other shopkeepers reported moderate to slow foot traffic and sales, especially on Saturday, which was cloudy and chilly. Artist/designer Jules Macher said she'd had little business at The Porch, though she added that her rather specialized shop does not cater to typical day-trippers.

Sunday afternoon revealed people of all ages strolling on the sidewalks, examining sidewalk displays, enjoying the benches in the sun and snacking.
Pat Carlson at Wickford Village Antiques and Collectibles said the weekend was slow but that overall, business has been picking up during the spring. Compared with last year, she said, "It's promising."
