NKHS Musical Production of "Disney's Beauty and the Beast"

North Kingstown High School Embarks on its Most Ambitious Theater Project Yet

The award-winning theater group at North Kingstown High School is pulling out all the stops to assemble four performances of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”, a musical being staged at the High School on March 9th-11th.

This production follows last year’s highly-acclaimed performance of the musical “Oklahoma!”, which was nominated in 12 categories at the CT High School Musical Theater Awards. The 2017 NKHS production was ultimately awarded the CHSMTA’s top prize for choreography.

The story of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” follows the adventures of Belle, an independent young woman who becomes trapped inside the castle of a prince who's been turned into a mysterious beast. With the help of the castle's enchanted staff, Belle soon learns the most important lesson of all—that true beauty comes from within.

This “tale as old as time” includes more than 60 cast members, spectacular costumes, custom-built sets, and a live orchestra to accompany the 17 song and dance numbers.

“This is a huge production” said Norma Caiazza, Music Teacher in the NKHS Fine Arts Department. “It will involve more than 100 high school students, and this year we have also invited middle school students to join the cast.” The stage production is expected to draw interest from all age groups, with activities planned to appeal to younger children.

Unique to this year’s performance is a special event before the Saturday matinee, “Belle’s Tea” in which children will meet and have photos taken with Belle and the Enchanted Objects, while enjoying light refreshments. “We are hoping this production captures the interest of younger students”, said Caiazza, “and inspires them to develop an interest in musical theater.”

The four performances of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” will be presented Friday, March 9th at 7 PM, Saturday, March 10th at 2 PM and 7 PM, and Sunday, March 11th at 2 PM in the auditorium at North Kingstown High School.

Tickets will be sold in advance of the show at Dave’s of Wickford and Quonset, The North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce, North Kingstown High School and at Baker’s Pharmacy in Jamestown. Ticket prices are $12 in advance and $15 at the door (students $12 anytime).
