Matthew Steele is a sixth grader at Davisville Middle School and is competing in three events.

North Kingstown’s Matthew Steele is in Florida this weekend competing in the USATF Jr. Olympics in Jacksonville.

The 11-year-old athlete attends Davisville Middle School and he earned a chance to compete after a remarkable series of standout performances in the New England Junior Olympics and the Region 1 Junior Olympics in June and July.

On June 20 at the New England Junior Olympics, Matthew Steele took the Gold for the 11-12 Boys 100m (13.97s), 200m (28.31s) and Long Jump (4.11m).

Steele will be competing in all three events in the National Junior Olympics.

Only the top five athletes in the regionals are invited to attend the nationals, so Steele’s appearance in itself is a huge accomplishment.

We’ll talk to Steele when he gets back for a story, plus a report on his results in Florida.
