The following obituary was provided by Cranston-Murphy Funeral Home.
Gilbert N. Tourgee of North Kingstown passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Feb. 12. He was 65 years old.Â
He was the beloved husband of June L. (Bowers) Tourgee for 44 years. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Adrian J. Tourgee and Julia G. (Watson) Tourgee.Â
As a Vietnam veteran, he was presented with the Bronze Star for bravery, and the Army Commendation Medal for good behavior.
Tourgee was a former house committee member for the Anawan Club in Rehoboth, MA and was a former Director of the Board of the 100 Club. He was also the Vice President of Sales of Hyland Equipment.
His passion for being on the water was evident by the organizations he supported. He was a past Commodore of the Westerly Power Squadron. As a former member of the Wickford Yacht Club he participated in the Wednesday night races as both a racer and a committee member and was a member of the Wickford Yacht Club Frostbiting Association. He was also a volunteer with the Narragansett Bay Yachting Association Junior Bay Regatta.
He died at home with his wife by his side. He loved being home with his family, but also had a penchant for travel. If you were his friend, you were a lifelong friend. His energetic independence and clever wit kept everyone on their toes. He also believed you should never have to work the day after you had a day off.
Besides his wife, he leaves his two loving daughters, Michelle L. Tourgee Wood and her husband Mark of Hopkinton and Nicole T. Winsor and her husband Christopher of Wickford. Cherished grandfather of Brendan C. Winsor of Wickford. He was the brother of the late Norman L. Tourgee.
At Gilbert's request, his funeral and burial in the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery will be private. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. A waterfront memorial life celebration will be held this summer.
