Obituary: Richard S. Barker Sr., 73

Richard Barker Sr. of North Kingstown passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19.

Richard S. Barker of North Kingstown passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19. Hewas 73 years old. He leaves behind his wife, Carol (Jordan) Barker.

Born in Hartford, CT, he was the son of hte late William H. Barker and Lemira E. (Stratton) Barker.

Barker was a Vice President at Old Colony Co-Operative Bank, Newport National Bank and Rhode Island Hospital Trust National Banks. A 1957 graduate of Cranston High School, he also attended the University of Rhode Island, Bryant College, the New England School of Banking at Williams College, and the Institute of Financial Education Leadership at the University of Connecticut.

He was a past Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Tomorrow Fund and was presented with their Friend for Life Award. He also was past President of the Board of Trustees of Rocky Hill School, a former Treasurer of the Board of Trustees and is presently an Honorary Trustee. In recognition for years of service, he was presented with the school’s Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award and the Headmaster’s Award for Community Service.

Besides his wife he leaves a son Richard S. Barker, Jr. and his wife Whitney; a daughter Jennifer J. Fries and her husband Matthew; and five grandchildren Sara, Jonathan, and Eliza Barker; and Hannah and Amelia Fries.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, December 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. in The Butterfield Chapel 500 Pontiac Ave Cranston. His funeral service will be held on Monday December 24, 2012 at 10:00am in the Phillips Memorial Baptist Church 565 Pontiac Ave., Cranston. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to The Tomorrow Fund 593 Eddy St. Providence, RI 02903.
