
A 74-year-old North Kingstown man has died after firefighters battled a fire at 223 Annquatucket Road early Monday morning.
Firefighters said the call came in at around 12:57 a.m. and crews found an elderly man inside the first floor of the house. He had suffered smoke inhalation injuries and was transported to Kent County Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
First responders came upon the multi-family dwelling fully engulfed in flames and smoke, the North Kingstown Police Department said in a release.

A family of four that was living in the second floor of the house did escape safely and is being assisted by the Red Cross.
Two firefighters were taken to the hospital for injuries sustained while battling the fire but they were not life threatening.

Crews are at the scene and the fire remains under investigation by the North Kingstown Fire Department and the Rhode Island Fire Marshal’s Office.
Fire officials said the initial investigation shows the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
