Pre-Diabetes Class Starts at Senior Center on Jan. 9

News from the North Kingstown Senior Center.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is set for Mondays beginning Jan. 9. The schedule is Jan. 9, 23, 30; Feb. 6, 13, 27; March 6, 13, 20, 27; April 3, 10, 17, 24; and May 1 & 8.)

Pre-diabetes can lead to Type 2 diabetes. One out of three American adults has pre-diabetes, and most of them do not know it. Having pre-diabetes means your blood glucose (sugar) level is higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. This raises your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Are you at risk for diabetes? You may have pre-diabetes and be at risk for Type 2 diabetes if you are:

45 years of age or older;

Overweight;

Have a family history of type 2 diabetes;

Are physically active fewer than three times per week;

Ever had diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes) or given birth to a baby that weighed more than 9 pounds.

With the Diabetes Prevention Program, you learn:

How to fit exercise into your daily routine in order to lose weight;

Ways you and your family can eat a healthy diet by adding more fruits and vegetables;

How to avoid diabetes through a CDC-approved curriculum.

Through the program you will get:

Once-weekly sessions (for 16 weeks) & ~ 6 monthly follow-up sessions.
