Quonset Board OKs Cape Wind Lease

The leased sites would be used for turbine part storage and staging before shipment.

Cape Wind was awarded a lease for 13.8 acres in Quonset Business Park that would be used for storage and staging of wind turbine components after the Quonset Development Corporation board voted to approve the lease on Tuesday.

The lease, which Cape Wind has until April of 2015 to sign, could bring anywhere from 50 to 100 more jobs to the port and covers two properties -- a 11.6 vacant site near Ocean State Job Lot's facilities and 2.2 acres near Terminal Four.

The lease payments would be about $229,000 per year.

Cape Wind will use the sites to store turbine components shipped from Europe and then transfer them to barges that would then head to Nantucket Sound, the Providence Journal reported.
