Viewfinder: NKHS Students Plan For Life After High School

The NKHS Guidance Department welcomed parents and students on Wednesday night for an interactive presentation, lecture and job fair on how to navigate the path toward higher education or vocational training.

Hundreds of parents and students turned out Wednesday night for the 4th Annual Post Secondary Planning Night at North Kingstown High School.

The three-pronged information presentation sponsored by the high school's guidance department catered to the needs and interests of every type of student with the school system: college bound, career focused and uncertain.

"It took more than 100 people to pull this night off," Donna Sweet, guidance department chairperson told an audience of students and parents at the beginning of the night. "I'm impressed with the people who came from near and far to be here tonight."

A career fair in the gymnasium featured 30 colleges and universities alongside another 30 career, technical, military and vocational opportunities. Presenters engaged students, explaining the benefits of their own chosen paths.

The guidance-run evening was intended to get the incoming senior class of 2012 on track for embracing life after high school, as well as provide alternative opportunities to students who may not be collegebound. Informational sessions by a representative from WayToGoRi.org and other state-run organizations explained the everything from financial aid to college applications to NCAA Clearinghouse regulations.
