📰 News we're reading

1. Assignments 09.17.26 (thericatholic.com) — St. Anthony Parish in North Providence will see a change in ministry as Reverend Stephen Kwak Sunghwan becomes Catholic chaplain at Rhode Island Hospital and chaplain for the Catholic Korean community while remaining in residence at the parish. Bishop Lewandowski also named several priests to key diocesan advisory bodies for terms beginning September 1, 2026.

2. North Providence Council Delays 1204 Douglas Ave Fight (upriseri.com) — North Providence residents concerned about the massive storage project at 1204 Douglas Avenue will have to wait until October for possible action, after the Town Council delayed its fight and may hire outside legal counsel. A tense special meeting exposed confusion over zoning approvals, building height, and what counts as a "minor" change, while neighbors questioned how the project expanded so dramatically.

3. Statues Moved From Religious Order Property in North Providence (news-usa.today) — A long-standing religious property on Fruit Hill Avenue in North Providence has been cleared of its statues and monuments, and the nuns' remains have been reinterred in Cumberland. Neighbors now face uncertainty over how the 16-acre site will be redeveloped, with potential implications for traffic, zoning, green space, and the town's tax base.

4. How soaring diesel prices are having an impact locally (wpri.com) — North Providence school families are somewhat shielded from record diesel prices because the town's busing contract uses a fixed fuel rate, unlike Providence, where costs fluctuate with the market. Still, high diesel prices are straining truckers, public agencies, and fire departments statewide, and experts warn relief is unlikely until global supply pressures ease.
