PAWTUCKET, RI — Police responding to a call of shots fired during an eviction in Pawtucket found a resident with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Officers sent to investigate the report of shots fired about noon Monday learned Rhode Island State Constables had been at the residence serving an eviction notice, the Pawtucket Police Department said in a media release.
"Due to the severity of the situation and uncertainty regarding the occupants inside the apartment, officers established a
perimeter around the residence," the release said.
The Pawtucket Police Special Response Team, crisis negotiation team, drone operators, major crime detectives, and bureau of criminal identification detectives were called in to assist, according to the release.
"After several unsuccessful attempts to establish contact with the occupant, officers deployed a drone into the apartment," the release said. "The drone confirmed that one individual was inside and appeared to have sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound."
Members of the special response team attempted to render aid, but the "individual had already succumbed to their injuries," according to the release.
The matter remains under investigation, the release said.
