Our town is celebrating its 375th anniversary this year, and we have a number of special celebratory events coming up next week. The first will be our 375th Gala Reception at Glen Manor House on Thursday, 29 August, from 5-7 PM. This will be the major social event of the year in Portsmouth and will give us all a chance to welcome our special guests from afar - The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress from our namesake city, Portsmouth, England, and the Mayors of Portsmouth NH and VA. Tickets are limited to 200 and are $25 each. They are going fast, so get yours while they are still available. They are available online through our website www.portsmouthri375.com or at the People's Credit Union.Â
On Friday, 30 August, there is another opportunity to meet our guests and enjoy some locally produced wines at Greenvale Vineyards. This event includes wine-tasting and chamber music in a beautiful pastoral setting from 6-8 PM. If you haven't been to Greenvale yet, this is an opportunity to sample their excellent wines and hospitality - their special 375th vintage will be featured. This is a free 375 event and open to the public, courtesy of the owner, Nancy Parker Wilson a major supporter of our 375th activities.
On Saturday, from 10-12 noon, we will have a 375th celebration parade along the loop from the High School, south on East Main Road to the library and then back to the high school via Turnpike Ave. Many local and regional dignitaries will be marching along with three marching bands and numerous other entries. Join the crowd along the parade route and support our celebration. The parade will be followed at 2 PM by a Cannon firing demonstration by the Newport Artillery Company just down the road from us at the Bristol Ferry Town Common. At 5 PM, the US and UK Polo teams will square off at the Glen Park Polo field. As you can see, this will be quite a busy day.
Finally, on Sunday we will host the 375th Family Picnic at Glen Park from 12 noon to 6 PM. This free event will feature a wide variety of activities for kids and adults, as well as demonstrations and static exhibits, with music provided by some local bands. Food will be available, with Cabral's famous gourmet chicken dinners available for $12.50 each. Tickets for these dinners must be purchased in advance by this weekend, and are available at the People's Credit Union or online through our website.Â
As you can see, this a will be a very busy Labor Day weekend. Please come down, enjoy the fun and support your community.
