7-Year-Old Hit, Injured While Crossing Portsmouth Street

The girl was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where she is in stable condition.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — A seven-year-old girl was injured while crossing the street on Sunday afternoon in an alcohol-involved crash on East Main Road. The driver, 19-year-old Benjamin Manning, hit the girl just after 3:30 p.m. as she crossed the street near Stubtoe Lane, Portsmouth Police said.

The girl was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is currently recovering in stable condition, police said.

Portsmouth Police said an unidentified 21-year-old passenger had an open container of alcohol in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Police determined that Manning was sober, however, after he agreed to both a field sobriety test and a breath test.
