"Abraham Lincoln" Speaks Tonight at the Portsmouth Town Hall

On the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address in 1863, Portsmouth resident Fred Zilian will perform as President Abraham Lincoln to reenact his speech and discuss its background through dialogue with the audience in the Town Council Chambers at 7 PM Tuesday evening, 19 November.

The Gettysburg Address is one of the best-known speeches in American history. It was delivered by Lincoln during the American Civil War, on the afternoon of Thursday, November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers' National cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, four and a half months after the Union armies defeated those of the Confederacy at the Battle of Gettysburg. The war continued until General Lee's surrender to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. A week later, President Lincoln himself laid dead, the victim of an assassin’s bullet.

This performance is part of our 375th Anniversary celebration and should not be missed. The words of the Gettysburg Address are as inspiring today as they were 150 years ago
