Amica 19.7 Newport Triathlon to Pass Through Portsmouth This Weekend

The Amica 19.7 Newport Sprint Triathlon kicks off Saturday from Third Beach in Middletown.

“Biggest Loser” contestant , who lost more than 100 pounds when he participated in the NBC show in 2008, will be among the many endurance athletes slated to compete in the 2011  on Saturday, September 24 in Newport, RI.

“It was an awesome race,” said Kruger, who competed in the . "Newport is a beautiful venue for a race. I can't wait to compete against a group of athletes that love triathlons as much as I do!"

The Amica 19.7 Newport will be Kruger’s seventh and final triathlon of the 2011 season. He also competed in the Amica 19.7 Boston in August. He recorded a personal best time and in doing so, won the Clydesdale Division at that race.

“I’ve had a good season,” said Kruger, a resident of nearby New Bedford, MA. “My goal is to finish it off by having my best race at the Amica 19.7 Newport and recording my best time of the year.”

The competition

Triathletes competing in the Amica 19.7 Newport will participate in a half-mile swim, a 16.1-mile bike and a 3.1-mile run. The race kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with the swim at Third Beach, followed by the bike course that goes through scenic Middletown and Portsmouth. The race then finishes with a 5k that ends at Sachuest (Second) Beach in Middletown.

Registration

On-site registration will be held at Sachuest (Second) Beach on Friday, 3:00-7:00 p.m. and on race day, 6:00-7:15 a.m.

The Amica 19.7 Newport is the eighth stop in the 2011 Amica 19.7 Triathlon Series, a sprint distance series of events held throughout the country. The 10-event series culminates in Phoenix, AZ, in November.
