5 Ways to Slim Your Budget and Waist When Food Shopping

Cut down on your budget, the junk food, and eat healthier with 5 easy steps! Learn how to make the most of your grocery shopping with healthy choices and smart saving tips.

Do you ever wonder how you went over your budget on groceries this week? Does your cart is filled up with junk food you don't need? Ever buy an extra jar of tomato sauce because it was on sale only to realize when you came home you already had five in the cupboard?

Cut down on your budget, the junk food, and eat healthier with 5 easy steps!

1. Make a meal list for the week. Take a half hour out of your day to plan your meals for the week. This way you can have a list written down of exactly what  items you need and won't over purchase items you already have.

2. Eat a meal before shopping. It's no mystery why all the candy and junk foods are at the cash registers. If you are hungry or your blood sugar is low (after an hour of shopping and starring at yummy snacks), you will crave salt or sugar! these little items add up. You can combat reaching for that bag of cookies by eating a healthy filling meal with lots of fruits, vegetables and fiber to keep you full and energized.

3. Bring only cash. If you are someone who cannot resist extra junk food temptation while shopping, bringing cash will provide a limit to your spending.

4. Shop around the perimeter of the grocery store. This is an EXCELLENT way to assure you're eating a fresh and healthy diet. Think about it, what is around the perimeter: fruits, vegetables, fresh deli and seafood, fresh meats, organic foods, eggs, milks, etc. It may be slightly more pricey to purchase organic lean meat or fresh vegetables, but you will be less tempted to impulse buy and will save more overall!

5. Shop alone or without children. Although in theory grocery shopping with your family can be a nice family experience, it increases your spending. Children have a tendency to reach out of the cart to grab things or want to buy junk food. If you know you have difficulty saying no to your children or your spouse is not on board for healthy eating, it may be best for your wallet and your families health to go it alone. Enjoy the time to yourself!
