Eating Healthy When Eating Out

Healthy options to eating on the go. Treat your body right!

If you are someone who is on the go all the time, then you are someone with difficult choices for healthy food.

It's well known that the healthiest food choices are the freshest foods. So how can someone going through the drive thru or eating on the run make healthier food choices and better habits?

  • Pack snacks. Apples, whole almonds, trail mix, gluten free granola, Kashi bars, bars, carrots and bananas are all healthy "easily accessible" on the go foods. You have five minutes between a meeting to eat lunch, grab a handful of almonds and a banana. This will help boost your metabolism if you eat small healthy snacks throughout the day.
  • Drink water instead of soda. When we are feeling really hungry, we may actually be just thirsty! Soda is a diuretic and will dehydrate you more than quench your thirst, plus it's tons of calories! A common symptom of dehydration besides thirst is hunger. Bring that bottle of water with you and fill up consistently during the day. Enjoy 8 glasses a day.
  • Choose healthy places to eat for lunch. If you HAVE  to eat on the go, choose a place that has the freshest food and healthiest options so you won't be tempted.
  • Go for individual choices instead of the value meal. Although I will encourage you to stay away from fast food all together, that grilled chicken sandwich with a side salad is much more healthy than a burger and fries. Fast food is not fresh and is prepared from low quality foods.
  • Eat an apple or high fiber snack before going out to eat. The fiber will help fill you up quicker so you won't be as tempted to eat so much of that yummy Fettucini Alfredo at your favorite Italian restaurant.
  • Skip the bread. When going out to dinner, the bread served fast can really spike your blood sugar as well as pack on 200+ calories with every piece. Opt for a salad appetizer with lots of dark greens and water. Dark greens have lots of fiber. This will help satiate you while your waiting for your meal.
  • Choose a light beer or glass of red wine instead of a mixed drink. While those margaritas may taste great, they can be upwards of 500 calories each! A light beer offers approximately 100 calories per 8 oz glass. Red wine may be between 100-150 calories and also offers heart healthy antioxidants!
  • Use meal replacements. When there's not enough time, sometimes it's necessary to drink a quick shake. Dr. Kosciusko offers top quality meal replacements at your office. These not only help boost your metabolism, these gluten free shakes are hypoallergenic and give you a great amount of vitamins to boost your daily energy.
