PHS Baseball Falls To South Kingstown in Patriots’ Day Game

Rebels outpace Patriots in D-I action Monday.

Hitless through the first 4 innings, s offense came alive in the 5th inning; however, it was not enough to upend South Kingstown, as the Patriots fell to the Rebels 9-6 Monday at Old Mountain Field in South Kingstown.

Down 2 runs in the 5th inning, Portsmouth scored five runs after sophomore Peter Lowen smacked a single, scoring Matt Peters and Matt Greenman. Later in the 5th, senior shortstop Robbie Wordell lined a double down the right field line securing three additional runs for the Patriots. 

South Kingstown’s offense countered Portsmouth’s big inning, scoring six runs in the bottom of the 5th after the number nine hitter, Chris Collins, ripped a double, scoring two runs. South Kingstown hit Portsmouth pitchers well with 14 hits in total.

In the 6th inning the Patriots pushed across another run, when junior Matt Greenman hit a sacrifice fly, scoring pinch runner Alex Costa. However, South Kingstown responded yet again, in the bottom of the 6th, when Shane Newton drew a walk scoring a bases-loaded run for the Rebels.

Despite an optimistic Patriots Day, and an offensive charge in the 5th inning,
Portsmouth eventually surrendered to the Rebels 9-6.
