Portsmouth Abbey Students Volunteer With Local Elementary Students

Students talk to fourth-graders about self-esteem and making good decisions

Beginning in 1989, Portsmouth Abbey School students have been volunteering with the Teens Leading Children program at neighboring St. Philomena School. Organized by Nancy Weida, a nurse at Portsmouth Abbey,  TLC allows Portsmouth Abbey students to talk with fourth-grade students about important issues they will face.

Students at St. Philomena are very excited to talk to the older students, and the program provides an excellent opportunity to discuss self-esteem, decision-making, avoiding dangerous situations, and drugs and alcohol. Several of the Portsmouth Abbey students who now lead TLC remember participating in the program when they were fourth-graders.
