Portsmouth’s Offense Leads to Victory over Coventry
Patriots baseball beats Coventry12-10 Friday at Bob Crudup Field.
Offensive firepower was on display at Portsmouth High School Friday, as the Patriots and Coventry Oakers combined for 26 hits. Portsmouth, however, held on to win 12-10.
The Patriots improved to a 3-1 league record after taking down the Oakers. Portsmouth has now beat East Greenwich, Middletown and Coventry, with their only loss coming against Chariho.
For Portsmouth, senior 1st Baseman Alex Greer had a huge day at the plate including an inside the park homerun scoring Anthony Serina, as well as a triple in the 5th inning, providing the Pats with 3 RBI’s.

Also showing their offensive power for the Patriots were Tim Mello, Robbie Wordell, Anthony Serina, Matt Peters, and Matt Greenman, having 2 hits apiece and combing for 7 RBI’s.
Peters notched the win for Portsmouth. The sophomore allowed only 4 earned runs over five innings, striking out one, while walking none.

Portsmouth held off Coventry, as the Oakers were unable to overcome a six-run second inning deficit. The Oakers put up a fight as they scored 4 runs, in the top of the 6th bringing the game back to a 2 run lead.
However, senior pitcher Eddie Hole closed the door for the Pats, providing them with two shutout innings after relieving senior right-hander Ryan Swarz.
The Patriots will next play South Kingston, Monday, at Old Mountain Field. First pitch will be thrown at noon. Portsmouth hopes it can continue its offensive surge against one of their best league opponents.
