Warwick Vets’ Pitcher Overpowers Patriot Hitters

Portsmouth baseball falls to Warwick Vets, 3-1

Shane Johnson, a senior at Warwick Vets’ High School, pitched one of his best games against one of the state’s top offenses. Johnson threw all 7 innings accumulating 138 pitches, surrendering only 1 hit, and boasting 16 strikeouts, as Warwick Vets’ beat Portsmouth High School 3-1 on Monday, at Bob Crudup Field in Portsmouth.

In the top of the 1st inning the Hurricanes of Warwick Vets’ scored first, after leadoff hitter TJ Boyajian smacked a double to left center. Boyajian eventually scored after Vets star pitcher, Johnson, lined a RBI single.

In the bottom of the third, the Patriots scored their only run. Senior Tim Mello led the inning off with Portsmouth’s only hit of the game. After stealing two bases Mello eventually scored on a passed ball.

In the 5th inning Warwick Vets’ took the lead once again, when the Hurricanes scored one run on a sacrifice fly by Johnson. In the top of the 6th inning, Vets added an insurance run to bring the score to 3-1.

Senior Eddie Hole pitched 6 innings for Portsmouth, while Alan Wojichowski relieved him in the 7th. Both pitchers kept the Patriots in the game; however, the Patriot offense didn’t provide much help.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, Portsmouth had a late rally after drawing 3 walks; however, the Patriots couldn’t capitalize with their base runners, as Johnson shut the door on the Pats finishing the one-hitter strong.

stand.
