"Cancer Doesn't Rock" Concert to Raise Funds for Breast Cancer Research
Sydney Menning, a senior at Portsmouth High School, puts on her very first "Cancer Doesn't Rock" benefit concert this weekend.
No matter how young or how busy, Sydney Menning, a senior at proves that making a difference isn’t as difficult as some may think.
“I want kids my age to realize that they have what it takes to make a difference,” said Menning, who just this year founded the “Cancer Doesn’t Rock” benefit.
The concert will be held Saturday, March 5, at 1 p.m. at One Pelham East, Newport.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Breast Health Center at Women & Infants Hospital in Providence.
At a young age, Menning experienced tragedy when her grandmother passed away from breast cancer.
“My family has always been affected by breast cancer," she said. "Both my aunt and my best friends’ mom were diagnosed with it a few years ago and luckily beat it.

"When my aunt underwent chemotherapy and lost her hair, my family decided to have a party in her honor, which is where the ‘Cancer Doesn’t Rock’ benefit evolved from.”
Throughout her life, Menning has been involved in relays and races benefiting breast cancer research, but has always had an urge to branch out on her own.
“I want to be the person to make the change," she said.
Unlike many high school seniors, Menning has been looking forward to her senior project since she was in her first year at Portsmouth High School.
“Most people dread senior projects, but I was pumped,” said Menning. “Not only is it something I’m passionate about, but I also plan on studying music and business in college and this is giving me the experience I need.”
Menning has already gained lots of experience through booking the bands, marketing the show and organizing event logistics. “I’ve learned a ton when it comes to booking and working with artists,” said Menning. “It’s giving me insight on how concerts work and how everything works.”
The concert will feature local bands, including Phone Calls From Home, One Step Away, Small Talk, This Time Around and Sunrise Theory.
There will be a bake sale within the venue. The cover charge is $15 at the door and more donations are welcome.
All proceeds will benefit the Breast Health Center at Women & Infants Hospital.
