Canvassers Meet on Possible Case of Voter Fraud

The question came up about possible voter fraud during the audit, undertaken after every election, Jacqueline Schulz said.

PORTSMOUTH, RI — A possible case of voter fraud is being investigated in Portsmouth, according to Jacqueline Schulz, registrar of voters.

Schulz said the board will meet in closed door session Friday at 1 p.m. to discuss the situation. The next step, if necessary, would be to turn the investigation over to the Portsmouth Police Department.

Only one vote is being investigated, she said. The conclusion will not change any outcomes in the Nov. 8 election, she confirmed.

Schulz said the question about voter fraud came up during the regular post-election audit.

"We do audits for every single precinct," she said. It involves updating all the voter information and cross-referencing it. That's when the possibility of voter fraud was discovered, she said.
