Tonight: Football Team to Raise Money for Breast Cancer Prevention
One lucky fan will win an autographed Wes Welker football at tonight's football game. Raffle proceeds will benefit breast cancer prevention.
's varsity football team will strive towards reaching a different goal at tonight's home game — raising money for breast cancer prevention.Â
"We are partnering with the NFL and the American Cancer Society to help raise awareness and funds to help promote screening for breast cancer," said Stephen Trezvant, director of athletics.Â
Portsmouth High School will play against Barrington High School at tonight's home game, starting at 7 p.m.

During the game, students will raise funds through donations. A special drawing will also be held at the game for a chance to win a Wes Welker autographed football.Â
The effort is part of "A Crucial Catch" campaign, a partnership between the NFL and American Cancer Society to raise awareness about the importance of annual breast screenings, especially for women who are 40 and older.

Throughout October, NFL games will feature players, coaches and referees wearing pink game apparel, on-field pink ribbon stencils and special game balls - all to help raise awareness and funds for this important campaign.
Fans are also encouraged to wear pink tonight to support the cause.Â
"Breast Cancer is an issue that has directly touched the lives of so many. The NFL, the American Cancer Society and now Portsmouth High School are committed to helping make a difference in breast cancer prevention," wrote Trezvant in an e-mail.Â
All donations from Friday's game will go directly to the American Cancer Society, benefitting its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign.Â

The American Cancer Society will also hold the 16th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Providence walk on Sunday, Oct. 30, at Roger Williams Park, Temple to Music. This noncompetitive, inspirational event raises awareness and funds to make strides to end breast cancer by finding cures and supporting programs and services for all people facing the disease.
