Thanksgiving Football Fans Asked to Park Elsewhere After Rain Soaks Fields

Heavy rainfall Wednesday soaked grassy areas around Portsmouth High School where fans typically park.

are asking fans to park along Turnpike Avenue after heavy rain Wednesday soaked the grassy areas around the football field. 

"Due to the heavy amount of rainfall we have received, all grass fields normally used for additional parking for the Thanksgiving football game at will not be allowed due to the field conditions," wrote Police Chief Lance E. Hebert in a press release issued Wednesday. 

"We ask that all regular designated parking areas be used first at the high school and then all additional parking will be diverted onto Turnpike Avenue."

Both the north and southbound emergency breakdown lanes on Turnpike Avenue will be used for parking. "No-parking" laws will be suspended prior, during and for one hour after the game.  

Officers will be posted along Turnpike Avenue to assist with parking and pedestrian safety. Please use the sidewalks and cross only where designated crosswalks are marked.

"We ask all attending the game to be mindful not to park in neighborhoods blocking driveways or side streets, and where 'No Parking' signage has been placed," Hebert wrote. 

The Thanksgiving football game against Middletown begins Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the high school.
