Kids Count Results Shows Increase of Food Stamp Participants in Portsmouth
The 2010 Kids Count report, released Monday, showed an increase in students receiving food stamps assistance.
Rhode Island Kids Count, a statewide children's policy organization dedicated to improving the health, education, economic well-being and safety of Rhode Island's children, released its 2010 report on Monday.
The report showed a 17 percent increase in the number of children receiving SNAP/food stamp benefits from 2009, which is slightly higher than the 12 percent increase in participants seen statewide.
However, the number of students participating in the school breakfast program in Portsmouth decreased by 4 percent. Program participation increased by 1 percent on the state level.

The 2010 report also showed a 24 percent drop in the teen birth rate for Portsmouth. In 2010, only 7.4 girls per 1,000 (ages 15-19) gave birth compared to 9.2 in 2009.
The Kids Count report also showed a sharp decline in victims of child abuse or, as well as a near doubling in the number of children receiving child care subsidies.
