Landlord Tenant Dispute Leads to Scuffle, Simple Assault Charge

Police handed Edward Burke, 65, a summons for allegedly pushing his landlady when she arrived at his door to inspect and take her property.

PORTSMOUTH, RI -- Police were called to an apartment on Blue Bill Way on Friday morning to deal with a landlord tenant dispute.

According to the police report, the landlord's husband told police their tenant shoved her when she arrived at the tenant's door around 10 a.m.

Her husband told Portsmouth police she went to the residence to inspect the property and collect some belongings. He went on to say they gave their tenant 48 hours' advance notice, but when she appeared at the door, the tenant became "angry and pushed her."

According to the police report, Edward F. Burke, 65, will have to appear in court to face a misdemeanor complaint of simple assault or battery, using hand or feet.

Burke refused medical help at the scene. He was not taken into custody, police said.
